We run a range of therapeutic groups for children and young people at MCFB around the themes of Fun and Friendship. They are smaller groups than most youth based groups with a membership of 8-10 children. The groups usually have a 'closed membership' for the duration of the programme ( 10-15 weeks).
The groups are facilitated by MCFB staff members with the support of social work students. There are often a range of factors impacting on the children who come to the groups which prevent them fulfilling their potential. Some of the children might be new to Edinburgh and feeling isolated; other children might be experiencing bullying or feeling a lack of confidence perhaps because of changes in their family.
The groups have a real mix of children from different backgrounds and communities and we work hard to ensure that we create a safe space for children to participate. In the groups we use a mixture of arts and crafts; play; games; drama and music in our sessions. We also work closely with outdoor providers to give children opportunities to access activities such as mountain biking, kayaking, archery and climbing.
The groups all have the following aims:
- To help children feel more confident and happier with who they are.
- To help children make friendships.
- To help children learn new skills around relationship building and taking part in groups
