Think for a moment – you have no cooker and you cannot cook yourself or your family a hot meal. Without a cooker, the cost of living is higher and eating ‘fast food’ is unhealthy. Fresh Start can provide a recycled cooker to our clients so they can cook a meal in their new home. When we receive donated cookers, our Trainees and Electrical Team clean them, check them for safety and ensure they are operational. They then help with the delivery and installation to our client’s home. Our Cookers for Christmas Appeal is an annual appeal we make in the months leading up to Christmas when we ask for donations of money to help fund this Service.
Each year FreshStart appeals to its supporters via the 'Cookers for Christmas' appeal. Money raised in this appeal goes to buy refurbished electric cookers and other white goods for new tenants who have been homeless.
These appliances are passed onto new tenants free of charge, giving them the means to cook themselves hot meals and wash their clothes. Unfortunately demand for cookers has not decreased and we do everything we can to get cookers out to the people who need them most. By working collaboratively with the City of Edinburgh Council we ensure that we are able to provide a cooker to clients who do not qualify via the Welfare Fund.
Please note that in order to qualify clients must meet Fresh Starts criteria. This furthers our aims of seeking to ensure that the cookers are then allocated to those most in need.
In the past Frest Starts' efforts have been boosted massively by a partnership with Scottish Hydro that enabled us to distribute brand new energy efficient appliances to clients living in fuel poverty.
At the same time almost 90 tonnes of electrical goods are diverted from landfill each year.
Fresh Start (Edinburgh) is a registered Scottish Charity and relies on the financial support of both individuals and organisations to help fund our range of services.
