Volunteering with Access to Industry can offer the opportunity to learn new skills, gain experience and support people towards their goals. We value the contribution our volunteers make and in turn we will support you to develop your personal and employability skills.
We regularly recruit volunteers to the roles below but we are keen to develop new roles and in different areas that we work. If you have a skill that you think Access to Industry and our clients would benefit from, please get in touch.
Board Member
Our Board are crucial to ensure the efficient, effective and accountable governance of the organisation and to provide strategic leadership and direction to Access to Industry’s management team.
Along with the Chair and other members there are a range of duties performed by the Board to ensure Access to Industry remains focussed on being in a position to achieve our vision. There is no specific knowledge or experience we require from our Board members other than a desire to support our clients to achieve their potential. As a Director you must be able to make a firm commitment to spend time on Board business. This time will mainly be focussed on the Board meetings (approximately 5 per annum) at Access to Industry offices. A degree of flexibility is required in order to attend additional Board meetings, subject to the on-going needs of the Board.
To find out more contact the Co Chief Executives for an informal chat, prior to formal application.
Receptionist/Administrator
In our Cowgate office we can have a busy reception with clients attending classes, groupwork and appointments. As our main office we also receive telephone calls that all come through reception.
Our Cowgate reception can be the first point of contact for clients and visitors therefore it is important both visitors and clients receive a warm welcome. We require our reception volunteers to have good customer care skills first and foremost both “face to face” and on the telephone, together with an empathetic attitude. Experience of Microsoft Word programmes is also required, training can be given on Outlook. We will support you to develop your reception skills, use of office equipment, IT skills and basic administration tasks.
We would require a minimum of 3 hours a week and ideally you would commit to a minimum of 2-months volunteering.

Classroom Assistant
Access to Industry works in partnership with Edinburgh College to deliver ‘Community Classes’. Access to Industry clients are enrolled in classes at any time during the year and work at their own pace towards SQA qualifications.
The Community College classes cover core skills with sessions of 2 hours 15 minutes running each morning and afternoon in Cowgate and once a week in Midlothian and East Lothian. You would need to be able to commit to at least one session per week for a minimum of 2 months.
The main role is assisting the lecturer. The greatest demand for volunteers we have is in our ICT class.
No previous experience is required but you should have a basic knowledge of the class subject you are applying to volunteer in.
