information SERVICE DETAILS

In response to poverty, lack of food, lack of fuel and social isolation, Jan Moore, a resident of Fidra Court in the Pennywell area of Muirhouse opened the Fidra Kitchen - a community cafe for the residents of Fidra Court.

The Community Kitchen in the ground floor communal room of Fidra Court, Pennywell Medway, Muirhouse (entrance is via the Cafe buzzer on the front door or via the back door at the opposite side of the block).

Fidra Kitchen is clean, friendly and bright.

Open every Wednesday and Friday from 9.00am – 2.00pm, the kitchen serves full hot meals and hot snacks like egg and bacon
rolls.

Fabulous fruit salads painlessly boost the users towards their five a day! And nutritious soups keep the winter cold at bay. In the summer the kitchen benefits from fresh produce from the local West Pilton community gardeners.

The kitchen operates on a donation basis, to ensure that no-one is excluded through lack of money.

Regular users include many Fidra Court residents, other locals from neighbouring blocks such as May Court and Gunnet Court, and the council workers who clean and maintain the building.

The menu is changed on a weekly basis, with the varied choice hopefully allowing those who can't cook or are suffering food insecurity/poverty to enjoy a filling meal and possibly encourage people to cook from scratch easily on a low budget.

We would welcome donations of food and any suitable equipment etc or funds to help the Fidra Kitchen.

We are always looking for new volunteers to help in the kitchen, so if you could give a hand please do get in touch.

Why not come down for your lunch, or a bite to eat and tea/coffee?

We also hold social activities and community events for all residents.

Fidra Community Kitchen provides FREE grocery bags and fruit/veg bags for people experiencing food poverty - one per household per week.

Fidra Community Kitchen provides FREE hot take-away rolls to people experiencing food poverty.

Hot cooked meals are provided, plus hot rolls. In addition soup and fruit salad are often on the menu. Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits. All offered on a donation basis so people can enjoy a healthy meal and pay what they can afford.

The number of people benefiting from the service varies from around 15 to around 30 people per day.

People in need can also still collect messages on a Tuesday or when the Kitchen is open Wed/Fri.

Computer Access...

Computers broadband access have been donated to the kitchen via the Community Renewal Project who also run a drop-in for people to get assistance with CV’s and job searches.

There is also an information section with free leaflets, such as on local activities and events, from local community groups and on benefits advice.

Fidra Court Community Kitchen is supported by local charity Community Renewal.

All are welcome.
