information SERVICE DETAILS

his is an enriching and stimulating day care service for older people with dementia, connecting with dedicated staff and nurturing volunteers. We believe that people with dementia are entitled to respect and dignity and we are passionate about improving the quality of life for our members and their carers in South Edinburgh.

Groups are limited in size to just 10 people, ensuring the highest level of care and also reducing anxiety about meeting large groups of new people. As well as the five days we operate at The Broomhouse Hub, a new service recently started in Gilmerton.

Both services cater for people with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, even people who have not yet had an official dementia diagnosis as well as a social opportunity for isolated older people. While The Beacon Club is about high levels of care for older people, providing games, activities and lunch, the real benefit is for carers who get several hours to relax, unwind or take care of things they need to do for themselves without worrying about the person they care for.

Care needs catered for:

Dementia, Hearing Impairment, Infirm and Elderly, Physical Disability, Visual Impairment

Activities...

Include - quizzes, board games, gentle exercise, music & singing, guest speakers, reminiscence and various other social activities according to their preferences, abilities and needs. Day trips and special events are also arranged throughout the year.

Past activities have included outings to places like the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh, the Water of Leith Heritage Centre and trips on a Seagull Trust barge on the Union Canal. We have worked with clients individually to help them tell the story of their lives in their personal "Life Story" book. Periodically the group undertakes an arts project such as making a colourful and inventive display for the wall. Each year, those who like gardening plant up the raised tubs in front of the Centre with bedding plants.

Food...

Two course lunch and tea/coffee and biscuits are served throughout the day.

Cultural needs catered for:

We cater for special diets if required. We would seek advice from relevant organisations and families to help support individuals with different cultural needs.

Transport with a trained escort to and from the venue is provided (included in the price). Alternatively, you can make your own way to us or travel with your carer.
