COVID-19 UPDATE...

Following the Government guidelines we will continue to provide this service remotely throughout the current lockdown.

Please call 0131 556 9302 or email info@saheliya.co.uk.

People receive counselling for many different reasons, for example:

- Abuse
- Bereavement and loss
- Depression
- Difficulties in relationships
- Isolation
- Racism and discrimination
- Stress and anxiety
- Trauma

At other times, you know or feel something is not right but you can’t explain what it is. Saheliya can help you explore these feelings and any other issues through counselling.

Saheliya’s Counselling Service provides a safe environment where you can explore issues and difficulties, and express thoughts and feeling about yourselves.

Your counsellor will listen to you carefully and try to understand your situation from your point of view.

Counselling is not about giving you advice or telling you what you should be doing. It is to explore your feelings and thoughts and reflect on what is happening in your life. It may help you to have a better understanding of yourself and your difficulties, and you are supported in making your own decisions.

Counselling at Saheliya:

- Our counselling is FREE for BME women and girls (12+).
- Our counsellors are women who are fully qualified or in their final stages of Diploma level training.
- They are from a variety of different cultures and backgrounds, and all have a good understanding of issues relating to race, gender, culture and how these impact the mental health of BME women living in Scotland.
- All our counsellors receive ongoing professional group supervision provided by Saheliya.
- Saheliya’s Code of practice follows the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Saheliya is an organisational member of BACP and the Confederation of Scottish Counselling Agencies (COSCA).
- It is provided in English and other BME languages
- Anything you discuss with your counsellor is treated with respect and kept confidential, it will not be passed onto anyone else unless it is with your permission. Only in the event of you or someone else being at risk may confidentiality be broken. Even in such circumstances, your counsellor will discuss with you what needs to be done.
- Voluntary – it is your own decision to see a counsellor.
- Childcare for children under 7 years old is free for women using our counselling services.

Saheliya offers counselling and therapies once each week lasting 50 minutes to one hour. You would need to be available on the same day and time each week once you have agreed to start counselling. Depending on the issues and situations, people sometimes need more than 12 sessions while others may need only a few sessions. You can discuss the length of your counselling with your counsellor once you start.

Our Counselling services have been recognised for innovation by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Saheliya’s Counselling services are funded by the City of Edinburgh Council and BBC Children in Need.
