information DESCRIPTION

The Homeless Period Edinburgh is a volunteer led campaign, providing homeless and vulnerable people across Edinburgh with sanitary items.

Periods are not a great time of the month for anyone, but when you have none or very limited access to the expensive 'luxury' of sanitary items, it is a truly awful and humiliating time, and because of the taboo that surrounds the topic, it's something that doesn't often cross our mind.

Some are forced to use ripped up cloths, old socks or toilet roll from public toilets, or make a few tampons last the entire length of their period. This can lead to infections, and so it isn't just the emotional impact - it's also the danger to one's health.

This is why I (Kerry) have joined Keely of the Albert Street Project in Birmingham in promoting The Homeless Period, to supply the women in Edinburgh with the items they struggle to get access to.

I now co-ordinate the Edinburgh project, collecting donations of wipes, underwear and sanitary items and produce care packages which are delivered to various projects and shelters across the city.
