information DESCRIPTION

STAND INTERNATIONAL is a Scottish charity (SCO37667) dedicated to working with marginalised groups and individuals in disadvantaged communities in Scotland.

Working with individuals and groups we help identify how they can harness their talents, experience of exclusion and their genuine compassion to assist others in either their local community or the wider global community.

Over the years we have also developed a number of partnerships with organisations in a variety of European countries including the UK who are keen to address the multi faceted layers of discrimination and exploitation whether in relation to age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity or social stigma.

Having identified suitable partners we then develop voluntary projects which would benefit from joint working and then agree on the duration of the project to ensure that we do not become involved in “hit and run” work but that any work is measurable and sustainable.

History
After some very successful joint work between two Scottish homeless charities and an international aid agency during 2003-2006, it was agreed that the volunteer programme STAND International should be given a priority of its own. To this end Stand International was set up as a separate charity at the beginning of 2007.

STAND is an acronym for “Start A New Day” which denotes the idea that participating in projects allows those involved to re-evaluate their opportunities presented in life and consider a new more positive start to involvement and contribution in their own communities.

Over the years we have developed successful partnerships through the volunteering service with organisations in some former Eastern European Countries, in Latvia, in Romania, in Georgia, in Ukraine and Belarus. Today, whilst maintaining these partnerships we are also actively seeking to initiate future relationships with organisations in Africa and Western Europe.

Today STAND is governed by a Board of Directors who come from both the public and private sector, local government and the voluntary sector. The Board has the responsibility for determining the strategic direction of the charity and compliance with all legislation both in this country and abroad.
