information DESCRIPTION

Opening our doors on 2nd June 1959, Edinburgh and the Lothian Samaritans was the second branch to be set up in the UK and the first in Scotland. Since then we have remained an open door for the local community, who need support from us. Our branch prides itself in being able to offer a safe place for people to be themselves and talk openly about whatever is on their minds.

HOW WE CAN HELP YOU

Talk to us any time you like, in your own way, and off the record – about whatever’s getting to you. You don’t have to be suicidal.

We’re there for people when they need us, which could be any time of day or night. People talk to us for as long as they like, as many times as they like. We don't rush, interrupt or push anyone out of the door. We let people lead the conversation at their own pace.

There's no waiting lists, and no assessments.

WE'LL TALK ABOUT DIFFICULT ISSUES

We don’t skirt around issues, and we’re not afraid to go into deep and difficult areas. Sometimes just having the acceptance from someone that what they say won’t be judged is enough to help people open up, and is such a relief to them.

From our base in 25 Torphichen Street, our volunteers work with different communities throughout Edinburgh, including schools, prisons & Network Rail to ensure awareness of what we do and so that our service is known throughout the city and the surrounding areas. All of the services and support we offer is provided by volunteers.
