information DESCRIPTION

Leith Theatre (also known as Leith Town Hall and alternatively, in 1975 and 1976, Citadel Theatre) is a theatre located on Ferry Road in Edinburgh. It opened in 1932 and ceased operation in 1988.

Leith Theatre was a gift from the people of Edinburgh to the people of Leith, following the forced merger of the burgh of Leith into the larger city in 1920.

The theatre was used by the Edinburgh International Festival from 1961 to 1968. Over the years the theatre hosted a wide variety of famous artists and bands, including Mott the Hoople, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC. The stage was also used by legendary director Yuri Lyubimov.

The Town Hall building, which houses the Leith Theatre in its East Wing and the Thomas Morton Hall in its West Wing, stands adjacent to the Leith Library. The smaller Thomas Morton Hall portion of the complex is still in use, for receptions and parties. The Leith Theatre Trust was organized in 2004 to "facilitate the refurbishment of Leith Theatre, it’s reopening and ongoing management.

LEITH THEATRE TRUST

Leith Theatre Trust was established in 2004 as a community trust to examine the options for the re-use of the theatre complex and its various spaces. Following an extensive feasibility exercise, which demonstrated that there is a viable future for the theatre, the Council’s Leisure and Cultural Services Committee voted at the end of April 2012 to begin negotiations to grant the Trust a 5-year licence over the theatre in order to develop these ideas.

This is a major step forward, which opens the way for the Trust to seek significant grant funding. This outcome has only been achieved through a sustained effort over a number of years with the Trust and its partner organisations.

Leith Theatre Trust has been formed to facilitate the refurbishment of Leith Theatre, it’s reopening and ongoing management.

The Leith Theatre Trust welcomes contributions from anybody who would like to work with us over the next 5 years to bring this vision to reality.

Our vision is to provide a venue containing a mix of flexible spaces that will be used for arts, events and education
